The aerospace industry is faced with highly complex and critical operational scenarios, exemplified by aircraft ground handling, where efficiency and safety are paramount. Simulation has become crucial for managing this complexity, allowing for analysis and optimization. Critical Path Analysis (CPA) helps identify the sequence of tasks determining the overall duration. Even though operations are formalized, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools utilizing SysML Activity Diagrams (AD) lack sophisticated CPA and formal verification. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a model transformation approach for converting SysML ADs into Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) diagrams. The contributions of this paper include defining mapping rules for transforming relevant SysML AD constructs to BPMN and demonstrating this transformation's feasibility using an aircraft standing phase case study. The results show that this approach enables advanced analyses, such as stochastic CPA and formal verification, which are challenging to perform directly within the original SysML modeling environment.

Release: Detailed process documentation in the new version 3.4 of PragmaDev Process.

PragmaDev Process aims to verify and optimize operational process models described using BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). The new version of the tool allows users to further document each symbol of the modeled process with formatted text.
Large organizations or complex technical systems are based on processes that can be modeled graphically. The most popular notation is BPMN. It describes what the different participants do and how they interact with each other.
Version 1 of PragmaDev Process introduced the market's first BPMN model animator, version 2 introduced a statistical simulator of process performance, and version 3 introduced the management of resources associated with processes.
PragmaDev Process V3.4 introduces several features to facilitate process reading and simulation results analysis:
			1) Textual Description: It is now possible to associate a formatted textual description with each symbol in the process. Based on the markdown formalism, an informal description can be associated with each activity and saved in the model. Links to external documents and embedded images can be inserted in the description. This allows the process model to be supplemented with explanations or details without compromising its readability.
			2) Final Simulation State: Following a simulation, all execution logs are saved. To analyze what happened during a scenario, it is useful to view the final state of the process. In previous versions, this required saving the log as a scenario and replaying it in the execution engine. The new version allows you to directly access the final state with a single click.
			3) Messages displayed in the critical path: In previous versions, the critical path did not display message exchanges, which could sometimes make analysis quite difficult. The new version also displays messages within the critical paths.

There is a high demand for low code development environments, whether it is to accelerate application development in a highly technical setting or for end users to personalize a device. According to market intelligence provider IDC in January 2023, the market is expected to experience a 17.8% annual growth from 2021 to 2026, with projected revenues reaching up to $21 billion. Low code serves as an abstraction to traditional programming languages, resembling a modeling language. Various proprietary notations have been developed specifically for low code development, although they lack standardization, portability, and reusability, often necessitating some level of training. This study delves into the characteristics of low code notations and explores whether established standard modeling languages like SDL or BPMN could serve as viable alternatives through simple practical use cases.

Release: Optimized number of replications in PragmaDev Process V3.3.

PragmaDev Process aims at verifying and optimizing business process models described with BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). The new version of the tool automatically optimizes the number of replications necessary for a statistical simulation.
Complex organizations or system operations are based on processes that can be modeled graphically. The most popular notation is BPMN. It describes what the different participants in the organisation do and how they interact with each other.
Version 2.0 has introduced a statistical simulator of the process performance and version 3.0 has introduced resource management associated to the processes. Because BPMN simulations are based on statistical data, each scenario has to be repeated a substantial number of times so that the results eventually converge. The number of repetitions, called replications, is a tough number to evaluate. So a large arbitrary number is often used, making simulations quite long and tedious.
PragmaDev Process V3.3 introduces a replication number optimizer that automatically evaluates if there is a need to continue repetitions of the scenario. For that matter the tool needs:
a desired accuracy, called Precision. A confidence level of 95% means that for a given number of subsequent replications, the values of 95% of those replications should fall in the interval.
a lookahead value that is the number of extra replications to run after the desired precision has been reached, in order to make sure the upcoming simulations results still fall in the desired interval.
This new feature dramatically reduces the number of replications. Depending on the model we have in some real industrial cases witnessed a reduction by a ratio of a 100.
Also included in V3.3 is the export of BPMN models in HTML, with the diagrams exported as SVG images. That allows to keep the navigation links in the export, but also to zoom in without loosing any quality in the model.

PragmaDev Process aims at verifying and optimizing business process models described with BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). The new version of the tool takes into account the resources necessary to the execution of each activity. Thanks to this new feature the simulation results are more accurate and the resources' usage can be optimized.
Complex organizations or system operations are based on processes that can be modeled graphically. The most popular notation is BPMN. It describes what the different participants in the organisation do and how they interact with each other.
Since version 2.0 PragmaDev Process integrates a statistical simulator based on BPSim, a complementary notation to BPMN. Time and cost information is added to any element in the model with a possible statistical variability. Executions are automatically launched with this information in order to evaluate the performance of the process.
Version 3.0 of PragmaDev Process introduces the concept of resources necessary to execute an activity. If the resource is not available, because of its own calendar, or because it is already being used by another activity, execution is put on hold until the resource becomes available. That impacts the overall execution time and cost of the business process.
Each resource can have several roles. An activity can require a resource directly or a resource that can fulfil a specific role. At the end of the simulation resource usage can be analyzed in order to identify bottlenecks or underused resources.
With this new version the BPMN execution engine can be called from the command line in order to be integrated in a larger environment. Finally the automatic exploration interface has been substantially improved.

Release: PragmaDev Process V2.1 analyzes critical paths and displays generic heatmaps.

PragmaDev Process aims at verifying and optimizing business process models described with BPMN (Business Process Model Notation). The new version of the tool introduces generic heatmaps and can automatically calculate the critical path.
In a business process the critical path is the sequence of activities that led to the actual overall execution time with the least inactivity. Any extra delay in that sequence of events will have an impact on the overall process time, that is why it is so important to analyze the critical path. After each run of simulation PragmaDev Process will calculate the critical path so that after the whole simulation statistical information for each symbol and will be gaphically displayed.
This new version also allows to connect a generic heatmap to the model in order to graphically display some quantitative information with colors. The heatmap file format is XML based and refers to the different symbols in the model. For each symbol a value is associated as well as a text. The whole diagram has a "minimum color" and a "maximum color". The rule to calculate the color for each value is configurable. The text associated to each symbol will be displayed in a tool tip in the BPMN editor.

Release: A new generation of model checker with PragmaDev Studio V6.0.

PragmaDev Studio V6.0 introduces a new generation of model checker and the support of the new SDL brodcast, making it the best modeling tool to specify and design safe communicating software.
Following a long collaboration with ENSTA Bretagne research lab, PragmaDev has integrated in its latest release of PragmaDev Studio, ENSTA Bretagne model checker OBP (Observer Based Prover).
The primary objective of model checking is to explore all possible scenarios in the model. During the exploration it is possible to detect dead locks, unreachable model branches, or to verify properties. This is a major feature that leads to a safer and more secure design.
The key caracteristic of OBP is that it does not rely on a dedicated language. It relies on a third party executor to execute the model. In PragmaDev Studio V6 OBP is interacting with PragmaDev SDL executor to execute the transitions. OBP does not actually know anything about the model it is exploring. It is the same principle with the properties. OBP evaluates complex properties made of atomic properties that are evaluated by the execution engine.
Communicating systems inherently create a lot of possible cases due to the fact that their designs are based on concurrent state machines. This creates a lot of possible paths of execution. PragmaDev Studio has built-in ways to reduce the state size during exploration:
Reduce the possible parameter values of the incoming messages as well as the number of messages.
Exclude some internal variables from the global model state.

PragmaDev is proud to be a partner of the OneWay project, led by Airbus and supported by DGAC (the French Civil Aviation Authority), which aims to ensure digital continuity throughout an aeronautical program.
In today's global economic competition, the aeronautics industry represents one of France's strengths. Made up of large companies, mid-size companies and small and medium-sized companies, the French aeronautics sector is the only one, along with the one of the United States, to have all the capacities to develop, produce and market aircrafts, civil or military. The French government has put in place a support plan for the aeronautics sector, the objective of which is to preserve French know-how and skills, while achieving the profound transformations to be carried out in favor of ecological transition. The strategy is geared towards environmental transition and the decarbonisation of air transportation.
The French aeronautics industry has acquired a recognized expertise of the complexity of its products, its programs and the interactions within its value chain. However, it must face growing challenges to acquire better control of its cycles, better efficiency of its engineering activities and to ensure continuous improvement in the performance of its products and support systems. At the same time, it must integrate technological innovations as quickly as possible and take advantage of the opportunities offered by emerging information technologies. These challenges inevitably lead to a need for a radical transformation of engineering methods within the French aeronautics industry and it is in this context that the ONEWAY project is situated.

The design of a practical but accurate software methodology to guarantee systems correctness and safety is still a big challenge. Where test coverage is dissatisfying, formal analysis grants much higher potential to discover errors or safety vulnerabilities during the design phase of a system. However, formal verification methods often require a strong technical background that limits their usage. In this paper, we present a framework based on testing and verification to ensure the correctness and safety of complex distributed software systems. As a result of the application of our methodology we obtain a more reliable system, in terms of functionality, safety and robustness and a reduction of the time necessary for verification. In order to show the applicability of our solution we applied it on a real industrial case study, that is the European Train Control System (ETCS) (ERTMS Commission Group - European Commission, 2017). We specify the system using the SDL language (ITU-T, 2019), and we use a test generation tool to generate abstract test cases in TTCN-3. Based on these standardized tests, we verify using model-checking, some critical properties of the system, in particular these regarding safety requirements. We analyse a real train accident and we demonstrate how the accident could have been avoided if the ETCS system was used.

MEGA International and PragmaDev have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen their business and share innovation technologies. They have worked together to develop a new product to help complex organizations optimize their models and processes.
To further promote innovation throughout the engineering ecosystem, MEGA supported PragmaDev in the development of PragmaDev Process, a new product that aims at verifying business process models described with BPMN (Business Process Model Notation) - the most popular notation for complex organizations and system operations. MEGA International has been involved since the start of the project as the project's use cases were coming from MEGA's HOPEX platform.
PragmaDev Process includes an editor, an executor, and an explorer to help verify that the model is consistent and is running effectively without any human (mis)-interpretation. It is the outcome of VeriMoB, a 2-year research project, financed by the French Army with use cases from DGA, Eurocontrol and Airbus Defence & Space.
As part of the VeriMoB project, an integration module has been developed and maintained by PragmaDev so that MEGA HOPEX users can easily verify their models with PragmaDev Process. In practice, the module can be downloaded from the PragmaDev website. A dedicated menu in HOPEX allows models to be transferred directly to PragmaDev Process, and in PragmaDev Process a dedicated button allows to return to the source diagram in HOPEX.
"This partnership will give HOPEX users a way to verify their models, and it will give PragmaDev the opportunity to work on very large organization models we would not be able to access otherwise," says Emmanuel Gaudin, PragmaDev Founder & CEO.
The Alliance partnership agreement is a commitment from both companies to keep working together in the future to offer the best of both their technologies to their customers. It includes cross marketing operations, further developments, internal trainings, and license exchange.
"HOPEX interoperates with process simulation, mining or RPA tools but none of them helps organizations to check processes consistency like PragmaDev Process. The capability to replay the processes after an update of the repository is especially important in system engineering where misunderstandings have severe impacts," comments Jean-François Bigey, Partner Director at MEGA International.

PragmaDev now supports a full on line licensing mechanism to buy or to rent both its products PragmaDev Studio and PragmaDev Process.
PragmaDev is a software editor offering two tool suites based on executable models. Both tool suites have a freemium model so that small projects can use the tools for free. When it comes to use an unlimited license, a specific license server must be installed. In large organisations this process requires administrator privileges and is quite time consuming. This is fine for large long term projects but can be a show stopper for projects that would like to use the tool only a few months.
PragmaDev official web site now offers a member area that is open to any potential user. Once the member profile is created it is possible to buy or rent any of PragmaDev tools for a specific period of time or with a monthly automatic renewal.
Once the license has been bought the member login and password are set in the tool. The license is then checked on line through the internet. That means the same license can be used on any type of machine anywhere in the world as long as there is an internet connection available.

Models of complex systems and systems of systems are described with NAF (NATO Architecture Framework) or DoDAF (DoD Architecture Framework). Business Process Model Notation (BPMN) is part of NAF and allows to describe the behavior of the different participants in the model. This notation is used by the French Army and its main suppliers to describe the interactions between participants involved in a mission. It is therefore important the models are correct. The VeriMoB project is a research project financed by the DGA (Direction Générale de l'Armement) which aims at developing a tool that will help users to verify their BPMN models. This tool covers three main aspects: static verification, interactive execution, automatic exploration of the possible scenarios. This paper focuses on the automatic exploration of the model with OBP technology coming from ENSTA Bretagne research lab.

PragmaDev Studio is a dedicated tool suite to specify and design complex communicating systems. V5.5 introduces the integration of a free ASN.1 encoder with its code generator making target integration substantially easier.
ASN.1 is an international standard to describe complex data types. It comes with a set of encoding and decoding rules to transmit the data in a machine independent way. It is used by everyone without noticing it in telecommunication, automative, banking systems, internet...
SDL, the core modeling notation within PragmaDev Studio, maps to ASN.1 declarations in a standard way. So when some information goes out of the model one of the standard encoding rule can be used to build the real bitstream.

Designing complex industrial systems or public service infrastructures systems is a fundamental strategic challenge for all academias, industries and governments. A relatively new discipline, centered on systems architecture & engineering has emerged in the academic environment. This discipline intends to develop theory, methods and tools that will allow engineers to manage the increasing complexity of the technical systems they must design and implement.

Mastering complex engineered systems is a fundamental strategic challenge. Complex Systems Design & Management (CSD&M) conference is a widely open meeting event dedicated to academic researchers, industrial and governmental actors who are interested in complex industrial systems engineering. The event is not limited to the existing specialists of the subject!
The 2-day conference allows since 2010 to discover and share about theories, methods and tools that have been developed to allow to manage the increasing complexity of the technical systems you must design and implement.
Thanks to its past 9 editions, CSD&M has become the conference of reference in the field of complex industrial systems architecture & engineering.
